Portable Toilets on Work sites |

Portable toilets are ideally suited for use on all types of work sites or work environments. However the placement and servicing of toilets on work sites needs to be carefully considered to ensure smooth operation.
Manufacturers design portable toilets to service a given number of people before they require servicing (waste removal). Customers who exceed the guidelines set out will most certainly experience an out of order portable toilet. In our experience we have come to the conclusion that the following factors must be observed when portable toilets are used in a work site environment.
Portable toilets should be serviced weeklyAlthough health department regulations require a mandatory fortnightly service our experience has shown that work environments place a high demand on toilet facilities. Weekly servicing is essential and the most cost effective way to ensure the toilets remain in operation. Not to mention also in a clean and sanitary condition. The costs of emergency call outs or a non-scheduled service far outway the costs of placing the toilets on a weekly service in the first instance.
10 people per toiletWhilst the Australian Portable Restroom Industry has no formal code of practice yet, the american industry which is represented by the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI), of which we are a member, publishes some clear guidelines as to how many people should be allocated per Portable Toilet. The PSAI and the American National Standards Institute (Z4.3) recommends 10 people per toilet for a work site environment. This assumption is based upon a standard 38-40 hour working week with a portable toilet that is serviced weekly.Instant Toilets & Showers has adopted the PSAI approach and recommends to it's customers that portable toilets should be provided for at the rate of 10 people per toilet in a work site environment.
Place your toilets close to your workersIt is commonly assumed that both males and females will need to use the toilet facilities once every four hours.
So think about how long it takes for your workers to walk from their place of work to the toilet facilities and back again? And then assume this happens at least twice a day as a minimum. How many minutes have you just lost of paid work time! Now multiply this by how many employees are on the work site ... and then by the number of days in their working week, followed by 48 weeks (52 week year less 4 weeks of annual leave) You might not like the result...
Multi-storey construction sites are a good example of where toilet facilities should be provided close to the workers. The time lost in a worker having to come down from the upper levels to ground level for toilet breaks is lost time and money.
It is our job to ensure that the facilities we provide are maintained to a high standard and remain operational for your users at all times. Please consider our opinions and advice which we have formed from our past experiences within this industry. Often the cost of unscheduled or additional services to toilets far outweighs the cost of providing the correct amount of toilets in the first instance.
